At just under 34 minutes, it’s a compact record built around James Mercer’s melodic songwriting, chiming guitars, layered harmonies, and a distinctly bittersweet strain of indie pop. It was recorded largely in Mercer’s basement in Portland, with Phil Ek assisting with production and mixing.
